Leaving after a lifetime
A long tenure ending in something smaller. It is two jobs wearing one date — a removal, which is simple, and a very large number of decisions, which is not — and the whole art of it is refusing to run them as a single exercise.
Nobody should be deciding what to keep in the week they are moving. Nobody.
How we run a downsize
Measure first, decide second
Get the dimensions of the new rooms and the doorways before deciding a single thing. Most downsizing anxiety is unfocused — a general dread that none of it will fit — and dimensions turn that into a short, specific, manageable list.
In practice the list is nearly always shorter than the household expects. Three or four pieces are genuinely marginal and the rest are fine, and knowing which three changes the entire tenor of the process.
Against "be ruthless"
Most downsizing advice reduces to being ruthless, delivered with great confidence by people who are not the ones losing anything. It is bad advice. Ruthlessness in the week of a move produces decisions that cannot be undone.
So the undecided pile gets a real destination — listed storage — and you decide later, in the new place, with the rooms in front of you. Some of it comes out and some of it goes, and both outcomes are fine.
Where things go if they are not coming
We are not a clearance company, an auction house or a valuer, and we will not pretend to be. What we will do is tell you which of those you need, in what order, and how the timings fit around the move.
Anything that might be worth something goes in front of somebody qualified before it leaves the house rather than after. And licensed disposal goes to a firm that holds the permission for it.
Bungalows, flats and sheltered housing
The usual destinations from a long tenure around here, and each has its own constraint. A bungalow is easier to carry into and often has a surprisingly deep loft of its own. A flat means a lift booking and a measured door opening. Sheltered housing frequently has move-day rules and restricted hours.
All three are established before the quotation rather than discovered with a vehicle outside.

01 How far ahead should we start?
Well ahead, in short sessions. The removal is booked on a normal timescale; the deciding needs months rather than weeks and it should never be compressed into the final fortnight.
02 Should we sell things before or after the move?
Before, where you already know. After, where you do not. Moving something to a smaller place to sell it there costs more — but deciding under time pressure costs more again.
03 Can you store what we have not decided about?
Yes, and it is the core of how we run a downsize. Everything held is listed as it is loaded, so you know precisely what is there when you come to choose.
04 Will you tell us what our furniture is worth?
No. We move it and record it. Valuation is a separate professional job, and an off-hand opinion from a crew is worth nothing at all.
05 What about paperwork and photographs?
They travel with you rather than on the vehicle. In a house being emptied after decades, documents turn up inside furniture with real regularity.
06 Is a bungalow an easier move?
For the carrying, usually. For the volume, not necessarily — single-storey houses around here often have deep lofts and generous garages, and both fill up.
How long have you been there?
Both addresses and the number of years in the one you are leaving. That second answer tells us more about the job than anything else you could send.
